As we all know, the Philippines has been rocked by a typhoon that has ripped away homes, towns, livelihoods, and taken over 100 000 last breaths. When something like this happens, most of us are watching it from the television, gasping at the horrors on the news and wishing they could do something to help.
It hit me when my fiancé and I were watching the 6 o’clock news, discussing the tragic reality of lives lost and children abandoned. I turned to him and said “Should we adopt a Filipino kid? We can give them a great life here, so much love and some siblings one day!” He smiled and pat me on the head.
A pat? What’s that about? I’m here offering to help save a life and all I get is a smile and a love tap? I was getting more and more passionate about this by the second. “But for real!” I pled “Why don’t we?”
“Oh you’re being serious?” He answered. “Jerrica, it’s not that easy.”
As it turns out, he was right. I hate it when that happens. Too often, in fact. Whatever happened to the wife is always right? Common English sayings fails us again! This is me shaking my fist in the air.
Okay, so maybe I was being a bit impetuous. But it got me thinking about how I can turn my good intentions towards something a little more realistic. Then I saw Authors for the Philippines. A forum for authors and literary icons to donate items for an auction. Where all the proceeds go to Red Cross’s Typhoon Haiyan Appeal benefiting those in dire need in the Philippines.
Oooo Oooo, I’m an author! I can donate signed copies! This is how I can help!
So, join me in my excitement. Help me help Authors for the Philippines help the Red Cross help the people affected by this tragedy. It may be a little less direct than adopting, but it’s something we can all do, together.
